My Mother's Witness

I made this series of my parents nearly a decade ago when my mother was still alive. At the time, I was grappling with their difficult and complicated relationship, using my camera as a way to understand each of their roles in the partnership.

What I see now more than anything in this series is my desperation to be close to my mother - to witness her interactions with my father, to capture her beauty as she cooked for him, to sit with her as she avoided reflection.

These photos are a love letter I didn't know I had written.
