Friendly Reminder
“Music has been my passion since I was 8 years old. I've always been in love with singing and performing live. The last 3 years of my life have been, magical, to say the least. After constantly feeling down about my place in society, being a young woman of colour, I've never felt that I can truly be an artist - and that there was always something that would get in the way of my success. The last 3 years, I've been working so hard on myself and my music. I got the lead role in a musical that I never thought I could achieve, I became student body president at my school, and I released 'Friendly Reminder,' an EP that I was working on for the last 3-4 years of my life. The EP consists of 4 songs - which takes the listener on a journey through the eyes of a strong young woman, who was in a relationship with a man which seems to be perfect in the beginning, (Track One: Honey) but then becomes difficult and hard to keep up with as she realizes theres a possibility that he's cheating on her. (Track Four: Get It.)
I wrote all the songs on the EP, taking experiences and feelings out of my own life, and crafting every lyric to ensure that it is just as relatable to me as it is to hundreds of women around the world.”
HONEY
The first track of the EP describes the first stages of being in a relationship with someone.
The way both parties first feel about each other, knowing that they have strong feelings but don't do anything out of fear! In a young girl's perspective, she remembers the times she felt this with other people in the past - and how those relationships never worked out. ("Been here a few times, fallin' but I've tried.") But once again, she recalls how she really feels about this new relationship, and she realizes that she had never imagined falling for someone as she did for him. The song continues to explain how she never knew love was a priority until he came into her life, and how she knows that he feels the exact same way. The production of this song was made to be magical and light, to fit perfectly with the way the lyrics were written.
THERE FOR YOU
The next track of the EP is written about the insecurities and fears in a relationship. Although things seem to be perfect, it seems as if no matter hard she tries to fight for him, he seems to distance away from her, and hide his feelings, rather than explain what's bothering him. The song continues to explain how she'll always be there - through thick and thin, to make this relationship work. The production is meant to be bittersweet, in a way, to compliment the idea of "hope," as the lyrics are both heartbreaking, but also caring.
MISSED CALL
The second last track of the EP describes anger and confusion in a relationship. It illustrates how it feels when you sense your partner being untrue, or un-loyal. She catches him lying to her, making excuses as to where he's going. The song itself, is written about her, waiting for him to call her back. She sits around the phone for what feels like hours after the time he said he would be back by. The bridge of the song includes all the excuses he's told her, and all her responses to them.
GET IT
The last track of the EP highlights the end of the relationship. She realizes she doesn't need him in her life, and that she's fine on her own. She describes the hurt she felt, being lied to constantly, and responds by ending the relationship completely and reminding him of all the times he acted as if she was the only one for him.
