Not Everything Has To Be Sad

I trained as a classical cellist in London, after that I was a bit defeated by the classical world and started recording cello for various pop artists and playing keyboard in bands.

I moved to France for a publishing deal for my songwriting, but the deal never helped me advance, and nothing ever got released. It turned out to be a real disappointment to be in this controlled situation, which should have been a highly creative period. Since then, I have followed the independent path and been producing and releasing my material alone under this different name of Beau Corbeau. I also continue to play cello for other people and have been touring for the last year with the pianist Chilly Gonzales.

In the lead up to creating this album, I had been struggling a long time to finish any songs. I wasn’t sure that I had anything left to say after my previous releases. Then out of frustration, I decided to give myself a 5-month deadline and release whatever I finished in that time, and somehow I managed to come up with these ten songs that make up the album. Most artists I think, write many many songs to then pick out the best, but I found that to compose everything in the matter of a few months lead to a more coherent mood and result, and the songs represent a very definitive chapter in my life. I recorded everything at my home in Paris, voice, piano, guitar, bass, some cello.

It’s not easy producing an album alone, but it’s the only way I have found to have a final result that stays fully true to me. That way, I can see the transformation of my creative choices and see my personal development musically and emotionally.
